Water for Humanity Production Team

2002/2003 - Quang Dien District, Vietnam

Water for Humanity (WFH) is a non-profit, volunteer based program created by ZENON. Under this program, employees and equipment/parts suppliers work together to build a water treatment plant for a community in need. The goal is to improve the quality of life in the community through a safe water supply.

Project Goals

  • To provide clean, safe drinking water to the residents of Quang Dien District.
  • To engineer, fabricate and commission a water treatment plant by the spring of 2003. The system must be containerized to allow for shipping, durable to withstand high temperatures and heavy rains, and simple to operate; as it will be maintained and operated by local citizens.

Community

The Quang Dien District, is a small rural village 20 km outside Hue City, in the People's Republic of Vietnam. The local population is estimated to be 2,000 people. Queng Dien is one of the poorest districts in the province, and has minimal infrastructure.

A health report issued for the region, revealed some tragic statistics about the common illnesses suffered by the community:

  • eye disease 27%
  • diarrhea 31%
  • dysentery 15%

All of these illnesses can be directly linked to the quality of the water in the village. Drinking and washing water is drawn from a shallow well, and is currently not being treated prior to use.

Filtration Plant

The water filtration plant designed for the District is based on ZeeWeed ultrafiltration membranes, the same membrane technology which is used by hundreds of other communities around the world.

The actual filtration plant has a small footprint of approximately 10' L x 5' W x 9'H, and is housed within a standard ISO shipping container. All required ancillary equipment and spare parts are housed in the container. Water is drawn from the Village's well to the ZeeWeed membrane tank for filtration. The membranes are the key to safe drinking water, as the microscopic pores on the surface of the membrane allow clean water molecules to pass and reject particles, bacteria and most viruses. On-site plant operation and maintenance training will be provided to the designated local contacts.
